The Republic of Moldova supports UK’s accession to the Government Procurement Agreement of the WTO

The Republic of Moldova supports UK’s accession to the Government Procurement Agreement of the WTO
28 November 2018, Geneva – At the informal meeting of the Committee on Government Procurement of the World Trade Organization, on 27 November 2018, the Republic of Moldova has expressed full support for the accession of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the international Government Procurement Agreement of the world trade system.

The position of the Republic of Moldova presented at the informal meetings of 17 October and 27 November states that our country did not block the complex process of the UK’s accession to this agreement. At the Informal Committee on 27 November, the UK has received agreement in principle for its accession to the international public procurement market in national capacity and a textual decision will be adopted in December, following the negotiations between the UK and a number of states.

The Delegation of the Republic of Moldova to the World Trade Organization congratulated representatives of the United Kingdom for the efforts undertaken and professionalism proven during the process of obtaining a consensus in principle in just 6 months after submitting the offer of accession to the Government Procurement Agreement, for the first time in the history of the WTO.

With a view to capitalize on the new dimensions of the political dialogue, trade and economic, as well as social potential, Republic of Moldova and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland are developing a solid, dynamic and mutually beneficial relation, including with creating favorable conditions for the economic agents and the community of Moldovans from the UK, in the context of the new migrational policies which will be adopted by  the authorities from London after Brexit.

Note: The current practice in the world trade system shows that the negotiations of a WTO member with a view to acceding to the Government Procurement Agreement can last at least 2-3 years. The Republic of Moldova became a member of the GPA Agreement in 2016.
